北杜市（ほくとし）は、山梨県の北西部に位置する市である。山梨県内の自治体として最北端にあたる。
平成の大合併により、山梨県北巨摩郡に所属する9町村のうち、小淵沢町を除き、長坂町・高根町・大泉村・白州町・武川村・須玉町・明野村の7町村が合併して生まれた市である。残った小淵沢町も後に同市へ編入されたことにより、北巨摩郡は消滅した。
市名である「北杜」は、植物の「ヤマナシ」を意味する「杜」から、「山梨県（杜）の北部」という意味をこめて命名された。 （しかし、山梨の由来は「山をならす」が転化したという説が有力で「ヤマナシ説」は弱い[1]。）
北杜市の名称が採用された背景には、旧自治体間での駆け引きがあった。いずれも譲らなかった結果、地理的・歴史的・文化的な由来が全くない完全な造語（瑞祥地名）である、北杜市に決定した。
