ソース場所：北都留郡小菅村
当村はJR 東日本青梅線奥多摩駅からの路線バスが運行されているため、生活圏は山梨県よりも東京都に属しており、山梨県の自治体でありながら固定電話の市外局番0428は北隣の丹波山村と共に青梅MA（単位料金区域）である。かつては隣村の丹波山村と同様に当村から上野原・大月方面を結ぶ通年運行のバスが存在しなかったが、現在は2014年11月17日の松姫バイパス開通を受けて翌日より運行を開始した大月駅方面発着のバスがある[1]。
また東京都水道局が水源涵養林（東京都水源林）としている山林もある。
